Idan K & the Movement of Rhythm

On the plaza overlooking the garden, we will return for a moment to the town square, the beating heart, the place where the community once used to gather at sunset, filling the concrete with laughter and conversation, with music and life. There, in this meeting place, in dialogue with and without words, art bubbled and creativity burst forth.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Crown Plaza will turn into a colorful piazza that will host a different street culture each day—we will wander through the Hammaras of Baghdad and Morocco and taste the African BARABARA—a street celebration full of rhythm and rootedness.

Idan K is a producer, percussionist, DJ, and primarily the personality and engine behind “The Movement of Rhythm,” an energetic ensemble of 10 musicians who bring us a lifting and moving celebration straight to the heart of the festival.

In a multi-cultural world of mergers and hybrids, in a musical landscape abundant with inferior substitutes and an industry flooded with clichés, the Movement shines brighter than ever. Its members present a combination of electronic music and Afrobeat, with a mix of African rhythm, Latin, House, Funk, and Reggae. Out of a unique musical vision, the band strives to break cultural barriers and create a new and fascinating sound, rooted deeply in the traditions from which the creators come, and sometimes even redefining the genres upon which it leans. The result is an intelligent and complex musical creation that takes music out of the worn-out boxes and descriptions, and brings us an infectious and sweeping performance-phenomenon.

Together they arrive at the Jazz Festival to return music to its natural, ancient place, to the street that belongs to us all, and will establish their seat in the festival’s new town square complex. There, between the seating areas and food stalls, they will remind us of music’s place in the fabric of daily life. Thus, in the atmosphere of the market and the street, they will raise an African celebration in the open Jerusalem air, in search of new ears worthy of a new thrill. These ears will identify unique and breakthrough sounds the moment they hear them.
