The Israeli Jazz scene has always been defined by it’s unique talents, and has long been a major exporter of culture across the globe, especially to Jazz in NYC. The late musician and instructor Amit Golan was a central figure in the cultivation of love for Jazz among several generations of young musicians. Golan, who was forever a team player, instilled the social values of Jazz in his students, by teaching them to listen to and support each other – in art and in life.
Golan completed his classical piano and composition studies at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, shortly thereafter moving to New York – where he dedicated his research to unlocking the secrets in the sound of Bill Evans, his favorite pianist. Alongside his studies at The New School in NYC, Golan devoted much of his time to traditional old-school teachings of greats such as Walter Bishop Jr, Billy Harper, Jim Hall, and Barry Harris.
Upon his return to Israel in the 1990’s, Golan began teaching Jazz History at the Thelma Yellin High School in Tel Aviv. With a sensitive spirit and youthful manner, he instilled his magnetic love of Jazz in the hearts of countless students. This year, a decade after his passing, a selection of his closest students and friends will come together to commemorate his legacy, and show profound love and respect for the man who opened the doors that led them where they are today. The program will include Golan’s original pieces – some taken from the album ‘I Decided!’ recorded in 2007, others from the album recorded by legendary trumpeter Eddie Henderson following Golan’s death. In addition, a number of arrangements of Jazz pieces Golan especially loved will be served in his unique style. Mischief, sadness, swing, longing, and above all passionate love – will be stirred together in this tribute created by Golan’s students.
